Garden visit

Another lovely visit form an International School in Bali to our permaculture gardens.

These young ones, ranging form 7-11 years were extremely interested in our gardens and especially all the animals they encountered during the garden walk. Butterflies, Tokes, all kinds of lizards and some of our beautiful birds, like the kingfisher, which resides here.

Opening a coconut, trying the meat of the coconut, cacao fruit, tasting basil and mint and then enjoying for lunch a banana pancake with cinnamon and honey. This was topped with a dip in our pool. Everyone left joyful and very happy. We really enjoy having young people discovering our garden.

Rice Straw for the Garden

Today we received several truck loads of rice straw and you can see our Balinese Team along with our volunteers working closely together and transporting the loads into the organic gardens to be used as mulch. When broken down in the rains, the straw offers a nutritious layer of top soil. Another very important function of the straw is to prevent the grass and weeds from growing in the garden beds. In our tropical climate this is a major challenge since the weeds grow throughout the whole year.

Production of our Bali Virgin Coconut Oil

When I arrived at Jiwa Damai as an intern, I had to organize the production of the Coconut House.  A very interesting and exciting project that I enjoyed doing with the help of Margret and Libby.

The production begins with Nyoman and Ketut opening  the coconuts in the tropical garden. The coconut meat is extracted before being transformed in flakes with a grinder.

Inside, in a green atmosphere, fruits are drying while the filtering process of oil is done by hand.

Empty jars and glass bottles are ready to package the delicious virgin coconut oil.

You can use it on your skin or for cooking. It is a really healthy food with lots of benefits. I had the pleasure to enjoy it in the delicious Balinese meals that are prepared by Made. Finished products are then nicely put together in the small shop of Jiwa Damai and other outlets.

Helping hands

... from our international friends. Our two wonderful volunteers, Laia from Spain Catalan, and Aitor form Equator are engaging in garden work, using the Balinese sickles to clean an area from Tapioka.

Tapioka is eaten as a vegetable, prepared with grated coconut meat.

Thank you for your contribution to Jiwa Damai!

Permaculture through the Heart

BALI Internship: Permaculture Through the Heart

May 15 - June 14, 2013

This innovative program blends the core principles of tropical Permaculture gardening with Self exploration from a transpersonal psychological perspective. "Experiencing Permaculture through the heart" presents a unique opportunity to combine class room Permaculture learning with “hands-on” experience, complementing the active physical engagement with the soil with an inner attitude of loving alignment with the earth. The internship is a combination of personal growth processes, allowing our heart energy to flow into our work with the earth, environment, water, soil, plants and people. This program is the first of its kind, working with the psychological framework of the mind, theoretical Permaculture principles, design and planning, planting, harvesting and food preparation - all in alignment with the heart energy.

“Permaculture through the Heart” is a modular seminar. You can choose if you want to book the entire program or if you only want to book the 1. and/or 2. week.

Article about Jiwa Damai

One of our guests, Simon Bradley, who stayed with us for 3 weeks wrote a beautiful article about Jiwa Damai, which is published on the website 'weekend notes'.

What a find to unwind

Our needs were simple. We required a break in a secluded location to relax, meditate and detox. We had three weeks to spare but didn't want to break the bank. Our search led us to

Jiwa Damai Bali Retreat

located about 20 minutes from Ubud, Bali.
